Quick Start: Auto Detect Looping

This quick start describes one way to get going quickly within the AUv3 version loaded in AUM. It's aimed at starting off by playing and having Loopy take care of setting the loop and the tempo for the rest of the project.

This is just one of the ways to do this, and just one of the many approaches that you can take in Loopy Pro.

  1. Load an instrument or audio input that you want to record into the input of an AUM channel.
  2. Load Loopy Pro as an FX in this channel. The sound from the input app is what you'll be recording. The app will normally open with some number of empty loops. If it doesn't, tap the folder icon and then New Project.
  3. Long-press the edit icon (the “cog” at the upper right-hand corner), then Settings, and finally Track Settings. 1)
    • Scroll down to Loop Audio Threshold Recording and turn it on. This will set Loopy to wait for audio input to start recording the loop. The threshold can be adjusted if needed.
    • Turn Auto Loop Detection on. Leave Auto-End Detected Loop off for now. 2)
    • Check that Wait for Playback is turned off.
  4. Backtrack out of Track Settings, then close Settings to get back to the main screen.
  5. Tap the tempo setting next to the pen icon.
    • By default the tempo slider will say “External”. We don't want this because we don't know the tempo we're going to play yet. So, tap the gear icon, then Synchronization. Turn off Host Sync, and optionally turn on Ableton Link. Turning on Link will automatically cause AUM to set it's tempo to match Loopy once our loop is set! (if AUM also has Link turned on)
    • Choosing a proper range for the estimated bpm of the loop here will improve loop detection. You can tap on the numbers and use the keyboard for input.
  6. When you're ready to record, tap the first loop. It should turn orange and be waiting for you to begin playing.
    • If the loop starts recording too soon you may need to adjust the threshold settings.
  7. Play something, then as soon as possible after you stop playing, tap the loop again.

If all went well you should have a well timed loop, with Loopy (and optionally AUM) all set to the right tempo! If you're not happy with the results, swipe down on the track and clear it to try again.

Automatic Loop Detection is amazing, but there are times when it doesn't capture the loop just the way you'd like. As soon as the loop is detected you'll see an icon at the upper-left of the donut. Tapping that opens a screen with a few other attempts. You can audition these here and select one if it works better.

Still not right? Tap the Trim Manually button. You can adjust the start and end points here, as well as adjust the detected tempo modifier and beats/bar until you're happy. If there are changes to the tempo in this first loop, the project tempo , and optionally the host, will take effect when you hit Apply.

1)
Track Settings here are the global defaults for individual tracks (loops).
2)
Auto-End detection is for when you already know how many bars you will be playing. It will cause recording to stop at the number of bars you set under the tempo settings in the main looping screen.
